The hockey season is back, and you can follow it all with us right here on BIH.
We are working on an archive of matches, stats and players from BIH in the past few years.
On the back of a stunning 7-6 come from behind overtime win against Basingstoke Bison, the Flames played the same opponent on Saturday night, this time on the road, where Surrey’s outfit were able to take an advantage and then cling to it for the bulk of the game while weathering an eerily similar late desperation comeback effort by the Bison who fell just short of that attempt, eventually falling to a 5-4 defeat. Spectrum’s men followed that up with their 9th consecutive win by thumping the visiting Milton Keynes Lightning, the league’s best defensive outfit, by a 7-3 count.
In the opener, it took only 67 seconds for Nathan Rempel to put the travellers up by a goal, but Steve Moria evened it at 11:24. Paul Dixon used a powerplay to put the Flames ahead with the first of 3 unanswered middle period strikes at 26:06. Neil Liddiard added another less than 2 minutes later and Martin Masa opened the 4-1 gap in the 38th minute. Just over 5 minutes into the final set, Rempel added his 2nd of the night to extend the lead further, but Ondrej Lauko finally sparked things for Basingstoke, pulling the score back to 5-2 a second before the frame’s midway point. At 54:50, Mindaugas Kieras added another to close the gap to a pair before Lauko cut the lead in half at 57:53 to stage an exciting finish. Dean Skinns was removed from his net in favour of an extra skater as the Bison worked to turn the tables relative to last weeks late events, but time wound down before they could complete the full blown reply.
With one last chance to win a game on home ice this season against the league champions from last term, the Flames made the most of the moment by derailing the Lightning success in Surrey this season. Masa put Spectrum’s favourites in front when he netted just over 5 minutes in. At 10:33, a Jez Lundin powerplay goal doubled the margin ahead of the break. In the 25th minute another Masa goal, his 40th of the campaign, extended the lead further before the Lightning struck back with a Monir Kalgoum goal at 26:52. Just 20 seconds after the faceoff, though, Rempel re-stored the 3 goal cushion. Michael Wales got that one back for the Lightning at on a powerplay at 30:28, but Andrew Hemmings answered with a goal of his own not long after the midway point. A Blaz Emersic powerplay goal cut the lead back to a pair at 34:30 with what turned out to be their final goal of the night. The home team tacked another 2 in the final 10 minutes. Rempel’s 2nd of the night came at 52:30 and David Savage finished the scoring with a powerplay goal inside the final 3 minutes.
Paul Dixon, Flames play caller, offered his thoughts of the weekend:
“It is exactly the time of year when you want to get yourself on a bit of a roll and we certainly seem to be in that type of groove. We want to continue to build on that confidence and take it right through to the playoffs, which we desperately want to finally win. There is that cliché in sports that you can’t turn it on and off, so when it is ‘on’ you want to do anything you can to keep it in that position. We are playing well in our own end and also seem to be always responding to any type of offensive attack the opponents can put out. When a team can do that consistently they become very challenging opposition. On Saturday it was a bit disappointing to have an 8 or 9 minute lapse late in the evening that was very costly and could have ultimately been a lot worse, but overall we are pleased with the weekend performance and of course also with 2 wins against a pair of the league’s top clubs. It is especially satisfying to get a home win against the Lightning who have really had our number this season on Spectrum ice. The string of results is a great morale elixir and we look forward doing everything we can to keep moving in this direction.”
