The Guildford Flames ice hockey club got back to work a day after Christmas on Spectrum ice and offered little in the way of holiday hospitality by delivering a painful 10-2 defeat to the travelling Bracknell Bees before handing the Scimitars in Sheffield a 4-0 shutout defeat 24 hours later.

On Boxing day, the home team jumped out to a 3-0 lead before the 1st period was 10 minutes old.  Lubomir Hurtaj knocked in the opener less than 3 minutes in.  Nathan Rempel converted a 5 on 3 powerplay advantage when he beat Carl Ambler in the Bees net to double the lead at 6:20.  Just over 2 minutes later, Martin Masa made it 3 during another Flames powerplay.  At 24:15 a David Savage strike widened the gap to 4-0.  The Bees pulled one back just over a minute later with a Jaroslav Cesky marker.  The reply was short-lived, though, as Neil Liddiard and Paul Dixon goals in the 28th and 29th minutes put more distance between the sides.  Nick Watt got another Bees goal at 34:47, but Stuart Potts re-stored the 5 goal cushion to send his side to the final period with a 7-2 lead.  At 48:54 Lukas Smital added to the count before another Rempel goal shortly thereafter.  Hurtaj finished the scoring with the double digit tally just over 8 minutes from time to finalise the outcome.

30 goals over a 3 game stretch had the Flames on a 3 game winning run as they headed to Sheffield on Sunday to take on the Scimitars.  Though the scoring output was dampened slightly, Surrey’s side extended their winning roll to 4 after taking down the Yorkshire outfit by a 4-0 score.  The visitors opened the scoring in the 1st with a Tom Duggan goal less than 90 seconds from the close of the frame.  At 27:57 Hurtaj extended the lead to a pair; an advantage they held into the final session.  The visitors created a bit of breathing room by taking a 3-0 lead thanks to another Hurtaj goal at 44:04.  Just a few minutes later Stuart Potts opened the 4-0 gap that would finish the evening’s offence.  Flames netminder Mark Lee posted his 2nd shutout of the season by turning aside all 17 shots directed his way.

Flames Head Coach Paul Dixon discussed the weekend and the resulting gain in the league table chase:

“Some or our earlier season results certainly put us in a challenging position as far as the league table is concerned.  December and Janauary are always key months of the season and there is no better time to find a bit of form than now.  We had several games in hand on some of our league table leaders and we have already put ourselves in a much better position in just a couple of weeks.  When you score a lot as we have done lately, it is a great confidence builder and it helps you to play much more relaxed which usually leads to better results.  We did that on Saturday and Sunday and we couldn’t have asked for a better start to the post Chhristmas schedule.  We are looking forward to trying to keep things on the up as we put more pressure on the clubs ahead of us.”
