Recently appointed assistant coach Tom Watkins will bring his GB U20s side to Shropshire for a warm-up game against Telford Tigers, ahead of the national team's World Championship campaign in Germany.

The fixture takes place on Thursday November 24 (8pm) with all tickets costing £5.

The Under-20s travel to Bavaria in December, to compete in the Division I Group A competition in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, best known as the venue of the 1936 Winter Olympics, where Great Britain took their only gold medal for ice hockey.

Watkins said: "I'm really excited about the game - it will be good for us to face completely different opposition. It is likely we will have a few different players with us, depending on GB selections from our own squad."

The GB junior teams have been under particular scrutiny this summer, as the International Ice Hockey Federation were persuaded to allow rock star Rod Stewart's son Liam to be eligible for GB selection, despite having only played hockey in the US previously.

The final trial for the team takes place this Wednesday, and Watkins has a meeting with U20s coach Joel Poirier and GB head coach Paul Thompson to discuss selection.

Watkins said: "Liam Stewart is currently playing at a good level in the States, and is certainly on the radar after the ruling that he is eligible. I'm sure Joel will take a careful look at him.

"A few of the player trying out I know well. A handful I don't know at all. It is always fascinating to see how those unknown players stand up against the guys we already know.

"To be honest, I was surprised how many players I was not aware of. I need to do my homework, although largely the selection will be down to Joel.

"Whoever is in the team, I'm sure the warm-up game will be a really interesting evening and I'm pleased we are able to give the Telford fans a first look at the team.

"Playing for your country is totally different to domestic games, largely because of the depth of roster - you can count on four very strong lines.

"The speed and intensity is something else, so the result against Tigers is impossible to predict."

Tigers next home English Premier League game is on Sunday (5.30pm) against Sheffield Steeldogs.
