Hull Stingrays picked up a hard-earned point after their 5-4 overtime loss to Elite League leaders Belfast Giants at the Odyssey Arena.
Stingrays made an excellent start by taking the lead on the powerplay in the fourth minute, with Jason Silverthorn capitalising on Graeme Walton’s tripping penalty for his fourth goal of the season.
However, their hopes of going into the first interval in front were quashed when Josh Prudden levelled for Belfast with just two seconds remaining.
Giants took the lead four minutes into the second session through Craig Peacock only for Stingrays to hit back as in-form Jeremy Tendler scored his fifth goal in three games.
The home side restored their lead in the 31st minute with a powerplay marker from Jon Gleed, just 33 seconds into Stingrays captain Kurtis Dulle’s hooking penalty.
Belfast then opened up a two-goal cushion as they capitalised on another Dulle penalty with Brett Hemingway, who netted a hat-trick in Saturday’s 5-3 win at Hull Arena, grabbing his 14th goal of the season with just 11 seconds of the powerplay left.
Stingrays, though, clawed back a goal 80 seconds into the final period with Matti Uusivirta scoring on the man advantage after Giants had been called for too many men right at the end of the second period.
They were then handed a chance to tie the game when Giants defenceman Tim Cook was penalised for interference with referee Dean Smith awarding a penalty shot but Silverthorn was unable to convert as netminder Stephen Murphy saved.
But Silverthorn redeemed himself in the 48th minute when he did restore parity with yet another powerplay marker, Hemingway this time sitting out for slashing.
The match went into overtime and after Stingrays were called for too many men, Dan Welch secured the extra point for Belfast with their third and the game’s sixth powerplay strike.
However, Stingrays suffered another injury blow in the second period when British forward Lee Esders sustaining a medial collateral ligament injury which could rule him out for two months.
Player-coach Sylvain Cloutier said: “It was disappointing not to get the two points but the guys battled back to tie it up in the third period. I thought it was a questionable call at the end there but it happens, that’s the way it goes sometimes.
“But this was a big point for us. Belfast may be missing a few guys but so are we and we lost Ezzie too which left us with eight forwards.
“We never gave up and battled back so we have to take the positives out of that.”
