Giants move further ahead
A second confident home display in two nights saw Giants strengthen their position as league leaders, with tonight’s victims Flyers only managing to break Stephen Murphy and Andrew Dickson’s shutout hopes with 9 seconds remaining.
An eighth straight win for Doug Christiansen’s men but Flyers Play-Off hopes are starting to fade fast with this their sixth straight reverse.
It took until 10.30 for the home side to break the visitors resistance with John Pelle on target but this galvanised the Odyssey side and before the opening period had ended further strikes came from Nick Kuiper on the powerplay at 16.17 and Robert Dowd at 19.15.
The middle session was Flyers best but they still could make none of their offence count while at the other end Giants scored the only goal from Craig Peacock only 90 seconds in.
Giants reasserted their domination in the final period and saw the removal of Garrett Zemlak from the Flyers net after goals by Aaron Clarke after 54 seconds and Jeremy Rebek at 44.19 on the powerplay. Replacement Blair Daly was beaten only once, that at 47.19 by Mike Hoffman but just as it looked as if Giants were about to gain their fifth shutout of the season Flyers were awarded a penalty shot with 9 seconds remaining and Steven Gunn converted past Andrew Dickson to give the visitors there only bit of joy on a night where they were well beaten.
