Giants moved seven points clear of Sheffield Steelers at the top of the standings following a comfortable win over Stingrays, with a third period blitz sealing the deal and defenceman Jeff Mason notching a hat trick.

The home side were in a confident mood throughout this one with Stingrays goaltender Christian Boucher in superb form before his back was broken in that final session which Giants won 4-0.

It took the Odyssey side only 2.33 to go ahead when Robert Dowd scored for the sixth successive game, this one shorthanded but Stingrays shocked the home fans when levelling at 18.08 thanks to Andrew McKinney’s fourth of the season.

The shot count was an amazing 19 to 1 in the second period in Giants’ favour but all they had to show for it was Mason’s first of the night at 34.47 to lead by the slim margin of 2-1 going into the third period.

Stingrays held in there until Mason was again on the mark at 46.58 on the powerplay and Giants went on from there to really rub it in, although it was late on before they added goals by Mike Hoffman at 55.28 and 57.38 before Mason completed his treble with 46 seconds remaining to end a good night for Doug Christiansen’s charges.
