The hockey season is back, and you can follow it all with us right here on BIH.
We are working on an archive of matches, stats and players from BIH in the past few years.
A high sticking penalty with 10 minutes to go gave the Giants the edge they needed in a tight affair at the Sheffield Arena. Pat Bateman’s goal at 50.26 early on in the 2+2 penalty called on Doug Sheppard put Belfast ahead for the first time and it was a lead they would hold to the finish. Belfast have now won four games in a row after slipping at home to the short benched Vipers two weeks ago.
There were more scraps than goals in the opening period. Sean McMorrow and Mike Sgroi dropped the gloves after just one second and it was the ‘Sheriff’ who came out on top. With just two seconds left in the period Randy Dagenais was called for charging. Tom Walsh squared up to Dagenais but it was the home D-man who won this battle. In between the fights Jeff Szwez hit the bar with a slapshot but goal scoring chances were hard to come by for both sides.
Great work from Jonathan Zion set up the opening goal of the game for Joey Talbot at 28.41. He skated around numerous Giants, keeping the puck to himself until Talbot got free and then set him up in a position from which he couldn’t miss. Sheffield had been in front for less than four minutes when Pierre-Luc Faubert shot from a tight angle and managed to squeeze the puck through Andrew Verner at 33.11.
The open play of the second period gave way to a more nervous game in the third as both teams realised the next goal would most likely determine the winner. Bateman’s powerplay goal after Graham Walton’s shot had rebounded off both the post and Verner’s back did settle the game in the Giants’ favour. Faubert added his second with an empty net goal four seconds from the end.
Sheffield’s discipline has been a problem all season and again they let themselves down in the third period. They followed up conceding on the powerplay by committing a delay of game penalty and then had Jason Hewitt binned for 10 minutes for abusing the officials. Any hopes of a late rally were quashed by a slashing call on Matt Hubbauer with under three minutes left, leaving them shorthanded and enabling the Giants to keep the puck for themselves for the majority of the time remaining and close out the win.
Stephen Murphy was rarely stretched but solid when called upon.
Belfast’s defence did a great job of blocking shots and on a night when their forwards couldn’t generate many good chances this was crucial to their success.
The teams meet again on Sunday night with Belfast looking to extend their winning streak to five and the Steelers trying to snap their Sheffield Arena losing streak that currently stands at three.
