Last Saturday evening saw the LBM Belfast Giants take on the mid-table Cardiff Devils at the Odyssey Arena. The Giants came into the game with two wins in their last two games, and the Devils losing their last two games. This season, the Giants have had the advantage in games against the Devils, with 3 wins out of 5 games played.
The game got off to a bad start for both teams, with both picking up bench minor penalties for too many men, within the first 5 minutes. Neither team were able to gain much of an advantage on the powerplay.
The Giants managed to add another penalty during their penalty kill, leaving them with a 5-on-3 disadvantage, as Michael Jacobsen sat for tripping. The Devils weren’t able to get any of their plays off the ground, being shut down by the Giants’ penalty killers every time.
Later in the period, the Giants gained an advantage over the Devils, as Matt Miller visited the box for holding the stick. This led to the Giants controlling the play in the Devils’ zone, registering a few shots on Stevie Lyle, but nothing too threatening.
The period consisted of a lot of end-to-end play, with both teams unable to find the net.
The second period was a lot more exciting. The Devils quickly went shorthanded within the first minute of the period, as Phil Hill got a call for tripping. The Giants showed clearly they were at an advantage, with a lot of chances on Stevie Lyle.
Just 14 seconds after their powerplay opportunity, the Giants managed to capitalise, with George Awada picking up his third goal in as many games. A scramble in front of the Devils net, as they regained their balance after the penalty kill gave way for a shot from Pat Bateman, which was deflected off Lyle’s pad onto Awada’s stick, leaving a quick goal, at 23:20.
The Giants were quick to double their lead, less than 5 minutes later, as Evan Cheverie rifled a shot through Lyle’s 5-hole, with Tim Cook and Pat Bateman picking up assists, at 28:26.
The Devils were quick to answer, as the Giants picked up a penalty – Kevin Phillips for interference. This gave Devil, Matt Miller a chance to fire a shot through players in front of the net, with Mark Smith and Wes Jarvis picking up assists, at 30:48.
The rest of the second period reverted back to the end-to-end play, with both teams picking up a penalty each. The period ended 2-1 in favour of the Giants.
The third period got off to a slow start, with Awada and Devil, Matt Miller, both served penalties for roughing, leaving the play at 4-on-4. During the 4-on-4 stint, Shane Johnson surprised the Odyssey crowd, as well as himself, as he rifled a slapshot from the top of the circle, hitting the crossbar, and exiting over the boards.
The Giants again went shorthanded, as Steve Thornton visited the box for high sticking. The Devils didn’t show much of an advantage on the powerplay, and barely managed to register a shot.
Not so long after, the Giants netted their third of the night, at 50:46. As Thornton and Shields crossed the blue line, a pass from Thornton to Shields left Lyle out of position as Shields fired a wrist shot past his blocker.
The Giants weren’t stopping there, as they added their fourth, at 53:52. A pass from Shields to Benedict on the wing left a shooting lane open. Benedict fired a shot, which deflected off Lyle’s pad, leaving an easy tip-in for George Awada.
All night, there had been words exchanged between Brad Voth and Sean ‘The Sheriff’ McMorrow. But Voth hadn’t managed to gather up the courage to take on McMorrow. The Sheriff let out his anger on the bench, as he taunted Voth, and pulled off Voth’s helmet. This earned McMorrow a 2+10 penalty for roughing and unsportsmanlike conduct.
The final score, 4-1 in favour of the Giants. Matt Miller picked up the man of the match for the visiting team, with George Awada picking up the Giants’.
