Gomenyuk: Stingrays can win playoffs

Ukrainian defenceman Pavel Gomenyuk believes Excel Hull Stingrays can pull off a surprise and win the Elite League play-offs.
Gomenyuk was part of the Newcastle Vipers team which beat Sheffield Steelers in the 2006 final before suffering defeat in the last four to Coventry Blaze - who included Stingrays player-coach Sylvain Cloutier and assistant-player coach Curtis Huppe in their line-up - two years later.
Despite sitting bottom of the table, Stingrays have been playing .500 hockey over the last 18 matches and are two points away from equalling the club`s best total in the top flight.
Gomenyuk said: “I believe we can win them. I played twice in the finals weekend for Newcastle and it`s an unbelievable feeling. It will be hard but this team can do it.”
Stingrays have four games left in the regular season with a trip to Sheffield Steelers tomorrow night followed by successive home encounters against Newcastle, Cardiff Devils and Sheffield.
Gomenyuk added: “I think it`s possible to win all four games before the play-offs. It will give us more confidence and I don`t think it will matter who we play because teams will be scared of us.
“The last game in Sheffield they scored an early goal. We need to play from the first whistle to the last. Sheffield start strong at home so we will need to be ready.”
