Gough retires a Peterborough legend

Peterborough hockey legend and Phantoms all time record points scorer, Brent Gough, has announced his retirement from the playing side of the game and is starting out on coaching back home in Canada.

Brent, who hails from Alberta, was introduced to UK hockey by Phantoms in the 2006/2007 season where he immediately ignited a potent partnership with fellow Canadian Taras Foremsky with both players going on to register 100 point seasons and only eight points held him back from repeating a century haul in the following season.

The 2008/2009 season was the greatest in Peterborough hockey history with the club winning a clean sweep of domestic trophies and Brent’s haul of 106 points played a huge part in lining the club’s trophy cabinet with silverware. Another prolific point scoring season in 2009/2010 secured top placement in all of Phantoms all-time points scoring charts with a series of stats that may go untouched for very many seasons to come.

Away from domestic hockey, Brent was invited to play in the Legends of Peterborough Hockey celebration game in 2007 that positioned him alongside the greatest players to have performed for Peterborough since 1982 - an amazing achievement for a player who, at the time, had only completed one season in the city. Further recognition across the city came when readers of the Peterborough Evening Telegraph voted Brent the Sports Personality of the Year.

Director of Hockey, Jon Kynaston commented, “Everybody at the club wishes Brent and his family the very best of luck for the future and and would like to thank him for his fantastic services to Peterborough hockey. During his time with us he has engraved himself in the history of our great club and his professionalism in all aspects was always first class, from his work on the ice during game-time, from the fact he never once missed a practice in his years here, to the media interaction and the Monday to Friday work with thousands of school children - he has been a model professional and one the club will find hard to replace. His role in our recent trophy hauls was prominent and for that he will be very fondly remembered in future years by our own fans and UK hockey fans in general”.

Brent was also keen to address Peterborough officials and fans on his retirement. ”To all the people that have supported me on and off the ice, in Peterborough:  thank you. After 22 years of playing the game that my life has revolved around and that I loved so much, I have made the decision to hang up my skates and retire.  My passion for the game has not ended, in fact I’m taking it to the next level.   I have recently accepted an Assistant Coaching position with the Westside Warriors of the BCJHL, located in West Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada.  Carly and I will be relocating there immediately after our wedding in August and I am looking forward to this new challenge.”

“I would like to thank all of the people that made the Peterborough Phantoms Organization a successful one during my 4 years as a player: From the Owners to the Management, to the Sponsors and to the fans: Thank you for all of the continued support and confidence and loyalty that you showed to me not only when times were good, but when times were tough as well.”

“To my coaches and teammates: I am so proud to have been part of the winning Treble team. That will go down as a hockey memory I will never forget.  Not only will I miss the moments on the ice when the team came together but more-so the beers after a tough game in the dressing room.  I have made some lifelong friends during my time in Peterborough and that might be the hardest thing for me to walk away from. And to all of the volunteers that put their heart and soul into this team: without you we wouldn’t survive. But now ..…”I’m tired and I need to go take a nap !”.

I would like to wish the Phantoms the best of luck this season and every season following and will always be following the teams’ success ! Thank you - Brent Gough #83″
