Hand impressed by spirited Phantoms

UK hockey legend and Manchester Phoenix player-coach Tony Hand was full of praise for the Phantoms side that pushed table topping Phoenix all the way on Saturday evening, “I was impressed with the way Peterborough kept coming back at us and when we made a couple of mental errors they took full advantage”.

Phantoms coach Doug Irwin was also pleased with the showing, despite being on the wrong side of a 4-2 scoreline, “even though we lost the game, I thought that was one of our best performances of the season - we just couldn’t score the goals when we had control of the game but we came back well and should have got more from the game”.

Phantoms continued their improved form with a home win over the Guildford Flames on Sunday evening, after which coach Irwin was in bullish mood, “If we could play ike that every week then we’d be top of the league - no problem. The guys went out there and did everything that was asked of them and more”.

“I thought Brent Gough was immense but it was in defence where we really excelled - James Ferrara keeps getting better with every game and Dwayne Newman delivered a real captain’s performance when we needed it. We need to keep that level of intensity going in every game so that we can put a run together and start to climb the table”.   

Phantoms next league fixture will be in Basingstoke on Saturday but they’ll have a chance to lay down a marker against their opponants when the two sides clash on Wednesday evening in Bretton as part of the Planet Ice Cup competition …… face-off is at 7:45pm.
