Hemingway treble sinks Stingrays

A Brett Hemingway hat-trick condemned Hull Stingrays to a fourth successive defeat as Elite League leaders Belfast Giants won 5-3 at Hull Arena.
Hemingway, Belfast’s leading goalscorer, grabbed his 11th of the season to put his side ahead after just 110 seconds.
Jereme Tendler levelled for Stingrays in the seventh minute but parity was shortlived as Jon Gleed nudged Giants back in front within 29 seconds.
Hemingway stretched Belfast’s lead with the only goal of the second period on a five-on-three powerplay and then claimed his hat-trick goal also on the man advantage.
Brad Smyth made it 5-1 in the 50th minute before two quick goals from Konstantin Kalmikov and Tendler (powerplay) gave Stingrays some hope although it was not enough.
Stingrays were without Lee Mitchell (knee) and Craig Mitchell (broken arm) while they also lost Ryan Lake to a hand injury midway through the game.
It remains to be seen if Lake will be fit enough to face Newcastle Vipers in the Elite League at Hull Arena tomorrow night (6pm face-off).
