The hockey season is back, and you can follow it all with us right here on BIH.
We are working on an archive of matches, stats and players from BIH in the past few years.
Having played for both the Newcastle Vipers and the Cardiff Devils, Rod Hinks believes Saturday’s clash at Whitley Bay Ice Rink (7.00pm face-off) could turn out to be the Elite League game of the weekend. Now living in Germany, Hinks will be looking out for the result having iced for the Winn Solicitors Vipers during the 2006/07 season with a short stint with the Devils during 2008/09.
“I always check the Elite League scores and news around the league” confirmed the Canadian. “It’s still early on in the season but Cardiff look like they have another good team, but seem to have had another slow start. Voth is the heart beat of the club so losing him to injury must have been a blow as they aren’t the same team without him. The Vipers have also had a slow start, but if they use their strengths on special teams they can surprise some of the bigger clubs in the league.
“Both teams have been recruited for the smaller ice surface, so I am sure that will make for a great game at Whitley Bay. The game will be all about ‘dump and bang’ as that is the only way you can play on a smaller pad, if the Vipers play smart and can stay out of the box they have every chance.”
Having played against Vipers coach Danny Stewart during his time in the UK, Hinks wasn’t surprised to see the former Coventry Blaze forward move into coaching.
“I wasn’t surprised to see Danny move into coaching, especially with Newcastle. It’s a great club, with great fans, so it’s great opportunity to start his coaching career off. If he shows his determination and his never say die attitude this will rub off on his players. He had been in Coventry for a number of years so his winning attitude can only help the whole organisation.
“I’ll be looking out for the result and in a way wish I was playing, but I am sure it will be a feisty clash which will make for a good game for the fans.”
Tickets for the visit of Cardiff are available now priced at £12.50 for adults, £9.50 for concessions, £5.50 under 16’s and £32.00 for a family (2 adults & 2 under 16’s) via vipershockey.co.uk/shop.
