Matti Uusivirta and Jeremy Tendler scored two goals apiece as Hull Stingrays snapped a four-game losing run with a 4-2 victory over Newcastle Vipers in the Elite League at Hull Arena.

Vipers took a first-period lead with a powerplay marker from Dale Mahovsky and 26 seconds later Stingrays suffered a further blow when defenceman Jozef Sladok was given a five-plus-game misconduct penalty for a check to the head.

But three second period goals put Stingrays in control with Uusivirta tying the game on the powerplay just 51 seconds after the restart before adding a second three minutes later.

Tendler produced a sublime finish on a five-on-three powerplay to stretch Stingrays’ lead but Vipers pulled a goal back in the 44th minute on the man advantage through Patrik Forsbacka.

However, Stingrays secured their first home win of the season when Tendler added his second with another powerplay effort with four minutes left.

Player-coach Sylvain Cloutier, who was without British trio Craig Mitchell (broken arm), Lee Mitchell (knee) and Ryan Lake (thumb), said: “We made it hard for ourselves but the bottom line is we got the two points and that is what we wanted out of this game.

“Newcastle are a good team and they will win their share of games. We have to compete with these guys and have to take points from them and move past them in the table. They took points from Braehead so they are not a bad team and you can’t take them lightly.

“We had to get the two points. We were down 1-0 but this team never panics. We found a way to win and as long as we can do that it’s going to be a big plus.”

Cloutier also felt the Sladok decision was harsh but believes the Slovakian blue-line made a statement as a result.

He added: “With Slads’ penalty I thought the guy turned into him but I want to see Slads do that more often, he needs to send messages like that out there.

“I told him after the game I was happy he got the penalty because it sends a message and guys will think twice about going with him in the corner. It says you are making guys pay the price for going into the corner and that is what we want to see.”
