Home sweet home for Cloutier

Player-coach Sylvain Cloutier feels Excel Hull Stingrays` fine recent home form will stand them in good stead going into the Elite League play-offs.

The 3-2 triumph over Newcastle Vipers last night was their sixth victory in eight games at Hull Arena with the two losses - against Cardiff Devils and Nottingham Panthers - arguably matches they should have won.

Cloutier, who scored his 100th career EIHL assist on Stingrays` third and game-winning goal against Vipers, said: “We want to be hot at home. At the start of the season I said I wanted to make Hull a hard place to come and play but when we were playing with 10 or 11 guys it made it pretty tough to make it difficult for teams who came here.

“But we have picked things up over the last few months and have beaten every team in the league at home and we want to take advantage of that in our home leg in the play-offs.”

Stingrays have four games left in the regular season with a trip to Sheffield Steelers on Saturday followed by successive home encounters against Newcastle, Cardiff Devils and Sheffield.

Cloutier added: “We go to Sheffield on Saturday and know we have to play for 60 minutes. They are probably the hottest team in the league right now. Matty [coach Dave Matsos] has finally got those guys going.

“They are the defending champions and have a lot of experience and they want to climb as high as they can in the standings and get hot for the play-offs too. It is going to be a battle but if we can play for 60 minutes we will give ourselves a chance.

“They beat us 6-2 last time we went up there but I felt we played a pretty good game, the score did not really indicate how the game went so we will see what happens this time.”
