Irving wants Steelers job

Former Elite League champion Joel Irving has today confirmed he wants the vacant coaching role with his former club, the Sheffield Steelers.
A Mike Blaisdell capture, the Canadian spent the 2003/04 season with the Steelers where he helped them to the league and playoff double during the Elite League’s first season.
Having spent the last three seasons in the Central Hockey League split between the Youngstown Steelhounds, Arizona Sundogs and Rio Grande Killer Bees, 34-year-old Irving confirmed he is interested in progressing into coaching.
"Coaching is something I have been considering for the future and an opportunity doesn’t come around like the Sheffield job everyday."
With the Steel City club believed to be looking for a player-coach to replace the departed Dave Matsos, Irving has made his interest known to owner Bob Phillips: “Mr Phillips is aware I am interested in the job and it’s something I feel would be a very positive move for me.
“The Steelers have a history of being successful, they are the biggest club in British Ice Hockey, they know what it takes to win and I still have fond memories of the organisation and fans from my time there”.
The former NHL draft pick of the Montreal Canadians could be one of a number of possibilities in the pipeline for the Steelers, with a former NHL player also believed to be in the running.
