Islanders announce netminding duo

The Peterborough Islanders have secured the signing of two more key players for the coming season - netminders Simon Wren and Rob McGregor both return to give the city side further strength at the back.

Team Coach Richard Wheatley said “It’s great to have both Simon and Rob on board for the new season. We’re building up a great group of players and both of these guys are a big part of that”.

Wren, a former member of the Peterborough Pirates, faced more shots than any other netminder in Division 1 last season and was one of the few bright spots in a difficult campaign for the club. He picked up the Players’ Player of the Year Award, as well as the Sue Green Memorial Trophy, for his efforts during the year and Wheatley was keen to emphasise the importance of bringing back the veteran puck stopper: “Wrenny really showed what he is capable of last season, and should be one of the top netminders in the league this year. His knowledge of the game and composure in tight situations is of great benefit to this team”.

Wisbech based McGregor is now in his second year with the team and was also pleased to be returning to the Peterborough Arena: “I’m delighted to be back. Last year was tough, but I think we’re all a little bit stronger for the experience and will bounce back a tougher and more determined team”.

Once again Wheatley was happy to see a familiar face between the pipes for the Islanders: “Rob worked really hard last year, and along with the work he has done this summer, Ross (Mackintosh) and I have seen a vast improvement in his game. He’s a great team player and is ready to step up when asked. The chance to play alongside Simon for another year will only benefit him; Wren is such an experienced player”.

McGregor said he is also looking forward to a second season with the former Pirates goalie: “Simon’s a great guy and his help and experience helped me a huge amount last season, I’m very happy to be able to play alongside him again this year”.

The Islanders first game of the 2010/2011 season is in just over three weeks, when they travel to South London to take on Division 1 outfit Streatham Redskins in a pre-season challenge match.
