Coventry Blaze netminder Brett Jaeger expects to be fit for Saturday’s Elite League encounter against Hull Stingrays at the Skydome.

The Canadian failed to appear for the third period of the 3-1 defeat at Newcastle Vipers on Sunday night after suffering “a tweak” and was replaced by British back-up Tom Murdy.

Jaeger was able to start the game after his match penalty in the stormy victory over Nottingham Panthers the previous night was downgraded to two minutes for crossing the centre line and a game misconduct for roughing after an altercation with a player off-ice.

He said: “It’s going to be a day-to-day thing but I should be fine for Saturday. I will get some rest this week.

“I just did not feel I could play like I know I can against Newcastle and did not want to take a chance and do more damage.”

Jaeger was also full of praise for Whitley Bay-born Murdy, who stepped into the breach against Panthers and Vipers at the weekend.

He added: “Murds did a great job filling in for me. He is a good goalie, he is laid back but very focused.

“He comes to the rink and works very hard in practice. He asks questions and he is a good competitor. He has all the attributes and has already shown what a good goalie he is and is going to be.”

Murdy, 19, will start tonight’s Best of British first leg clash with English Premier League side Manchester Phoenix at the Skydome.

He said: “I have learned a lot from Brett and he has helped me out so much. When you get a chance to play, you have to be ready to take it.

“It will be good to get a game against Manchester and it was nice to play and help the team at the weekend. I want to be a starter but you have to wait for your opportunity.”
