Kalmikov sinks Steelers
Leading point-scorer Konstantin Kalmikov netted the winning penalty shot as Excel Hull Stingrays posted a 3-2 home victory over Sheffield Steelers in the Elite League.
Matt Hubbauer gave Steelers, who outshot Stingrays 21-8 in the first period, the lead but Adam Knight levelled after being rewarded for some persistent play.
A scrappy second period ended goalless before Stingrays moved 2-1 ahead four minutes into the final session when Kalmikov, put clean through by Jason Silverthorn, made no mistake.
Steelers then tied it up in fortuitous circumstances, the puck deflecting past goaltender Martins Raitums off the leg of the unaware Robert Farmer. After overtime failed to separate the sides, Silverthorn and Jonathan Zion were successful with their penalty shots before Kalmikov popped up with the winner.
It was Stingrays’ first home triumph over Steelers in the Elite League and Cloutier said: “The patience Kalmi had… I was screaming for him to shoot the puck! He showed great patience and put it in and gave us a big win.
“The guys played really well. It should have been four points this weekend but we got three and we have to be happy with that. We now have another big week ahead, starting with Edinburgh on Tuesday night.”
