Late Lightning strike stings Bees in overtime
The Bees picked up another valuable point in Milton Keynes, but were just over four minutes away from an excellent victory in regulation time.
As ever in Milton Keynes, the Lightning came out flying and controlled the early stages of the game, opening the scoring at 05:09 with a Leigh Jamieson powerplay marker.
But buoyed by some excellent netminding from Tom Annetts, the Bees fought their way back into the match and created some fantastic opportunities of their own to get back on level terms before the end of the period.
If the Lightning shaded the first period, the Bees certainly shaded the second. At 21:37, Shaun Thompson latched onto a Michael Bowman blocked shot and crashed the puck into the roof of Alex Mettam's net from the slot.
Then at 33:53 on the Bees only powerplay opportunity if the night, Bowman deftly tipped a Ricky Skene shot from the point past a wrong-footed Mettam.
The Lightning laid siege to the Bees goal in the third period, but again Annetts and his defence turned everything aside, until 55:58 when Blas Emersic managed to find space to shoot a bouncing puck home past Annetts.
So for twelfth time this season, the Bees played overtime. Unfortunately only 25 seconds into it, the Bees were killing yet another penalty. This time, the Lightning made their man advantage count with a Lukas Zatopek shot from the blue line past an unfortunately screened Annetts.
Michael Bowman deservedly picked up the Bees man of the match award, but this was an excellent team performance with more positives than negatives and good news in the shape of a hard-hitting return to the ice for Carl Graham after two months out.
