Lawson: We will surprise our rivals

Netminder Richie Lawson believes the TDC Waste Management Northern Stars will surprise a number of their rivals this season. The former Elite League netminder joined the Stars this summer from the Newcastle Vipers where he had spent the previous three seasons.

Despite going out of the Northern League tournament last weekend at the quarter final stage, Lawson today indicated that the TDC Stars can be a match for anyone.

“I think we will surprise a lot of teams this year and turn a few heads along the way” said Lawson. “We’re going to have a number of rivals, you have to love the Whitley games, it brings out the best in the players and I expect that to be no different this season. Maybe we have also started a little rivalry with Fife after we took first blood last weekend. They will be looking for revenge but only time will tell.

“However, every game will be a test so we cannot underestimate anybody and we’ll not be surrendering our points easily. Teams will have to come to the Arena and beat our strong D core and be prepared for a physical game if they want to come away the win.”

Lawson is also relishing the opportunity of continuing off where he left off in the English National League.

“When I played for the ENL Vipers in my last full season we won the title. My personal ambition this year is again to finish top, but we are a young team and I think having the title of underdogs suits us very well. The younger guys on the team will gain valuable experience over the season and I can only see us going from strength to strength”.

The TDC Stars welcome the Nottingham (Saturday at 6.30pm) and Solway Sharks (Sunday at 5.30pm) to the Metro Radio Arena this weekend. Tickets are available on the door priced at £5.00 for adults with under 16’s receiving free admittance.
