The hockey season is back, and you can follow it all with us right here on BIH.
We are working on an archive of matches, stats and players from BIH in the past few years.
This years Elite League is the best yet, that’s according to Mobilx Newcastle Vipers head coach Rob Wilson. Following back to back wins at the weekend against the Cardiff Devils and the Sheffield Steelers, Wilson believes that the league has taken a step up in terms of standard this year in comparison to previous seasons.
“Right now the league is very competitive from top to bottom, even though Hull are four points adrift at the bottom, when they get healthy again they’ll be a match for anyone in the league” confirmed Wilson. “You just need to look around the league to realise how competitive it is, we’re nearly twenty league games into the season and between first and fifth there are four points separating the teams – that’s very encouraging for an exciting finish to the season for the league and for the fans”.
With the recent addition of Jeff Szwez into Belfast with the likes of Cardiff and Nottingham boasting Mark Smith and Cameron Mann, Wilson believes there are some very talented players around the league.
“Game after game I am looking down team sheets and seeing some very talented teams” said Wilson. “Obviously with the world economic downturn it’s enabled us to bring some very good players into the country which in the past we wouldn’t have had an opportunity with, but in terms of the league’s reputation abroad, it’s very good to have high calibre players willing to play here”.
Following the Vipers successful ‘Drive for 5’ weekend, Wilson also believes that the opportunity is there for the league to continue it’s growth in the future.
“I thought both games at the weekend were entertaining as a spectacle” confirmed the Vipers co-owner. “For anyone new coming to hockey for the first time it was certainly an exciting finish with a late Cardiff equaliser and then a Vipers overtime winner. That’s what hockey is all about, it’s an entertaining product and right now the Elite League as a whole is throwing up some interesting head to heads”.
The Vipers welcome the Coventry Blaze to Whitley Bay Ice Rink on Saturday (6.30pm face-off). Advance sale tickets are available now from the Vipers shop in Shakespeare Street, by telephone on 0191 261 0909 or online at: www.vipershockey.co.uk.
