Legue leads the way

Legue leads the way

Two goals from Jeff Legue helped the Sheffield Steelers come from behind to defeat the Edinburgh Capitals, their third straight league win at the Sheffield Arena. The Steelers have now closed to within 4 points of the Capitals in the league standings.

In a first period with few scoring chances it was the visitors who notched the only goal, a well worked powerplay strike from Owen Fussey at 9.12. Simon Lambert fed Dan Welch at the side of the net and his one-time pass allowed Fussey to beat Andrew Verner from right in front.

Edinburgh almost scored again shortly afterwards when Lambert flew past Ben Morgan and his wrap around attempt sat tantalisingly in the crease but Fussey couldn’t get a stick on it as he skated past.

Sheffield got back on terms in the second period with a powerplay goal of their own, Doug Sheppard redirecting a gentle blue line wrist shot from Jonathan Zion at 26.45. The hosts upped the tempo after the equaliser but needed another powerplay opportunity to take the lead.

Jeff Legue scored it at 35.54 with a howitzer into the roof of the net.

Cody Rudkowsky saved another Legue slapshot as the period came to an end but within 14 seconds of the third beginning the home forward added his second. At 40.14 Legue put the finishing touch to a lovely move that saw Jonathan Phillips make a key pass into the attacking zone to set up Joey Talbot. His shot was saved but the rebound fell to Legue and he had an unguarded goal to fire into.

Rudkowsky kept the Caps in the game with a succession of spectacular glove saves, denying Legue twice more and Phillips and when Mark Garside squeezed a surprise backhand shot past Verner on the short side at 49.46 the destination of the 2 points didn’t look so clear cut. Michael Benyon nearly tied the game with four minutes left but his shot from the blue line came through a crowd and off the base of the left post.

Rudkowsky was pulled in the final minute as the Caps pressed but they couldn’t work another scoring chance and the game finished 3-2. Robert Dowd could have added an empty net goal but he waited until he passed centre ice before shooting and the clock expired a split second before the puck hit the net.

Edinburgh have set their sights on catching Cardiff in fourth place but if Jeff Legue continues to play with this intensity and Newcastle pull out some more inspired road victories they might need to take a look over their shoulder.
