Leone returns to Raiders
Anthony Leone is the latest in a growing list of returnees to the Romford Raiders.
Leone proved an inspirational choice as captain last season, scoring 63 points (34 goals, 29 assists) in 38 league games to finish fourth in team scoring.
And player-coach Danny Marshall said: “Leone will of course be returning as captain. He always gives 110 per cent on and off the ice and his passion for the game is obvious.”
Team manager Mick Cahill added: “When Danny picked Anthony as team captain last season, I think it’s fair to say a few eyebrows were raised.
“However, ‘Jibber’ proved to be an inspired choice and an inspirational skipper. His motivation of other players was a real highlight in the dressing rrom and on the ice.
“More important for our results, Anthony also had easily the most productive year of his career last season and at nearly a goal a game, his points were vital in our campaign.
“He sustained a thigh injury towards the end of last season that would have stopped most players in their tracks but, such is his natural fitness, he played through the pain barrier and I would guess most people in the stands wouldn’t have noticed any propblem.
“He plays like he really gives a damn and understandably expects the same of his teammates. Anthony was away from Romford for too long but bringing him back last year was a Marshall masterstroke. I think he’s here to stay.”
Leone’s return follows hot on the heels of linemate AJ Smith and with the return of Tom Davis also confirmed this week, Raiders now have 10 names on their roster for 2011/12, including goalies Michael Gray and Glen Jackson, Marshall, Matt Turner, Jason Buckman, Juraj Huska and Julian Smith.
