Lightning were hit by Flames for the second time in two weeks with a 4-2 defeat as they paid the penalty for allowing the opposition to dictate the pace for long periods of the game.

Not until the final quarter of an hour when Lightning upped the tempo did the hosts look like getting anything from the encounter. Unfortunately by then, as it proved, it was too late.

Two goals in 17 seconds in the first period stunned the home faithful. Until then Lightning - with Monir Kalgoum back in the line up after injury - had been matching the visitors even if the game was being played at a slower speed than they would have liked. Kalgoum’s return allowed Nick Poole to assume bench coaching duties.

Both sides had only four skaters when Nathan Rempel struck twice in the 17th minute – Joe Graham for Flames and Michael Wales for Lightning both serving time in the sin bin.

Rempel shot high into the net on 17mins 34secs and then found himself unmarked on the left of goal for the second market at 17mins 51secs.

Adam Brittle had a good chance blocked by goalie Miroslav Hala shortly after the restart and Andre Smulter should have done better from Brittle’s set up with the goalie exposed three minutes later.  Lightning wasted a powerplay chance with David Longstaff called for tripping – the only real strike on goal coming from Leigh Jamieson.  Things got worse for Lightning when Rempel was able to break away unchallenged after being supplied by Longstaff and beat goalie Barry Hollyhead one on one at 37mins 47secs.

A switch around at the start of the third session saw Adam Carr move back into defence and Leigh Jamieson move to right wing.  As Lightning upped the pace it produced the desired effect with Jamieson getting the final touch as Hala left stranded following Gary Clarke’s effort at 46mins 43secs.  At 3-1 the game still looked beyond Lightning but then Jamieson met Kalgoum’s pass from the left to get goal number two at 48mins 30secs, raising hopes of a miracle comeback.

With the seconds counting down the hosts were still seeking the equaliser. Goalie Barry Hollyhead was replaced by the extra skater, Blaz Emersic, and Flames were able to seal the win with a fourth goal by Matt Towe following a well worked move 51 seconds from time.

On Sunday evening it was a case of so near, yet so far, as Lightning staged a dramatic third period fightback to run Manchester Phoenix close at Altrincham.  After falling 5-0 behind with less than a quarter of an hour to go Lightning then made an amazing comeback only to suffer the agony of a 5-4 defeat.

Phoenix player coach Tony Hand put his side 1-0 after only 3mins 28secs and Marcus Kristofferson then assisted as Curtis Huppe doubled the lead on 14mins 25secs.  If things were looking gloomy for the visitors by then they got worse as Huppe capitalised on a 34th minute tripping call on Lukas Zatopek with a strike at 35mins 35secs.  By the second break it was 4-0 to the home team with Kristofferson getting his name on the scoresheet.  Seconds before the break MK had a goal washed out and it really looked as though it would not be their night. James Neil added to the misery with Manchester’s fifth goal timed at 45mins 45secs.

Less than a minute later Gary Clarke set up Blaz Emersic to score at 46mins 37secs. Monir Kalgoum got his first goal since returning from injury on 51mins 38secs and with Adam Carr registering unassisted at 53mins 34secs it was suddenly game on.  When Carr stepped up and converted a penalty shot at 55mins 55secs the impossible suddenly looked possible. Sadly it was not to be.
