It was an evening of high work-rate but little end result for Milton Keynes Lightning on Saturday when they lost 1-2 to local rivals Peterborough Phantoms at Planet Ice.
It was perhaps a sign of things to come when Jeff Glowa gave the visitors the lead only 25 seconds in, after pouncing on the puck right in front of Lightning’s goal.
The visitors edged the first period in terms of chances created but they failed to get anything past a well-drilled Phantoms’ defensive unit, and netminder Stephen Wall who was kept busy for the entire evening. Lightning had a chance to equalise after eight minutes when Monir Kalgoum passed to Adam Brittle, whose shot then hit the post. The home side conceded three penalties in the first period alone, but they prevented the visitors from taking advantage of any of the resulting powerplays.
The high work rate of Nick Poole’s men in the second period was evident in the form of 21 shots on Stephen Wall compared with only two on home netminder Alex Mettam – but again, none of Lightning’s shots found the back of the net.
Peterborough began to exert more and more pressure in the final period and went 0-2 up when Glowa broke away to beat Mettam, one-on-one. But Lightning refused to concede without a fight and Blaz Emersic latched onto a Leigh Jamieson pass, to claw back a goal for the home side with less than two minutes remaining on the clock. Player-coach Poole immediately called time-out and withdrew Mettam to throw on an extra offensive player; and it looked like the move had paid dividends when Leigh Jamieson believed he had scored, only for the referee to wash out the goal after consultation, ending any hope that Lightning and another considerable home support had of taking the game to overtime.
Final score: MK Lightning 1 – 2 Peterborough Phantoms
