The hockey season is back, and you can follow it all with us right here on BIH.
We are working on an archive of matches, stats and players from BIH in the past few years.
Tonight the Wildcats were left unable to pick up their first four point weekend, after falling short to a physical Manchester Phoenix side. Although losing 7-3 by the end of the evening, the score did not tell the entire story of how the game played out.
As may have been expected the home side netted first at 7: 47 through Wood, before a replying goal was soon seen through the efforts of forward Ryan Watt. However from here things rapidly turned in favour of the home side, starting with a powerplay goal through ex-Elite league player Huppe. A minute on and the lead was then doubled through Stephen Wallace before the Wildcats then saw three more go past them to leave it 6-1 by the end of the first.
What began so well now set a high task for the Swindon team but not all was at a loss. Just over a minute in and the in-form Jozef Kohut then gave the Wildcats hope after netting one, before Ryan Watt then added another to the tally several minutes later. Around this point Wildcat import Toivo Suursoo then emerged from the locker room, showered and changed and suffering with what seemed to be an injury of some kind. Losing an import at any point is hard but coming back from a deficit like this, would make the task that much harder to achieve.
Things seemed to go in favour of the 'Cats however after fellow import Josef Liska was struck down in on goal and awarded a penalty shot at the hands of the referee. Nevertheless the Phoenix netminder would keep this shot out and take away Swindon's last chance of a goal. The rest of the second period saw the physical play pick up and many players take the body until the second buzzer was heard.
In the third only the one goal was seen, this time through Tony Hand who took advantage of a powerplay opportunity to close out the game. Giving up only the one goal in two periods show real testament to the Wildcat side, however it was the first period that really hurt them and something that they will undoubtedly learn from ahead of next weekend's fixtures.
Head Coach Ryan Aldridge commented on the game. " 6 or 7 minutes of the 1st period really cost us. The first 2 goals were questionable decisions, whilst Dougie let a few in he would like to have back. We had a solid middle period with one import out, and another good period in the 3rd with two imports out. We can take many positives out of the last two periods. Manchester is a really tough place to play and we showed great commitment in the way we tried to dig ourselves out of the hole we dug in the first period".
The Wildcats take on the Milton Keynes Lightning next Saturday at the Link Centre, in a game which is sure to be competitive with the current League Champions gunning for revenge after Swindon ditched the then favourites out of the Play offs. This is a game not to be missed. Tickets can be purchased at the Link Centre, on 01793 886857 or on www.swindonwildcats.com
