The Guildford Flames ice hockey club have come to agreement with 5’11”, 170lb netminder Mark Lee who will return to the club for a 2nd stint.  Off season surgery capped off an injury plagued opening term that limited his availability.  However, when he was in the line up, for more than 1300 minutes in league outings, he posted 17 wins against just 7 defeats with a goals against average of 2.37 and a 92 save percentage.  His post season record in leading the club to overtime of the playoff finals included a 1.49 average and a 95.2 save percentage. He was also the netminder of record for the 10-4 two game aggregate Premier Cup Win over Milton Keynes Lightning.

The 22 year old iced in 2008-2009 with Sheffield Scimitars, experiencing 656 minutes while registering a 90 save percentage. He spent the bulk of the previous season with the Romford Raiders where he started 24 games in the late stages of the term, posting a 92+ save percentage and a 3.08 goals against average.  The Sunderland native developed through the local junior programme, taking the ice for his first senior action with the Sunderland Chiefs in 2002-2003 and then Newcastle Vipers a year later.  He appeared with the latter side through 2006-2007.  His most notable production in Vipers black came during his final season at Tyneside when he stepped into 22 outings and came up with a 2.45 goals against average and a better than 91 save percentage.

Lee pairs with incoming Slovakian netminder Miroslav Hala to form the goaltending duo for 2010-2011.

Flames Head Coach Paul Dixon discussed the goaltending situation:

“When Mark was healthy he had a great season.  Even playing while injured in the Cup final and the playoffs he brought us as close to a double winning campaign as you can get without actually producing it.  We knew when the season ended that he would require significant medical attention to confidently continue his career.  We arranged that intervention immediately following the season and he is now well into a rehabilitation programme that we hope will have him ready to go by September.  We think he showed this past season that he is in the top handful of the new generation of domestically trained netminders, but the injury issues would be cause for concern without establishing depth at that position heading into the season.  We believe that the pairing of Mark with an experienced player of the calibre of Miroslav was the best way to solve those concerns while still getting Mark into the line up to continue his development.”
