Oxford had another mixed bag of a weekend with a double away weekend, first of all losing 10-3 on the Isle of Wight before bouncing back to take a point off Streatham Redskins in their final ever visit to Streatham High Road in an exciting 2-2 draw.

Injuries were the main talking point heading into the game with stars missing no fewer than seven first team regulars on Saturday however Oxford suprised the hosts by scoring first with a Josh Florey unassisted goal. Raiders bounced back with two quick goals before New Zealander Martin Lee scored to level it at two, which would end the first period.

Unfortunatly, Wightlink upped their game in the following periods, and scored six on the bounce to put the game out of reach. Oxford did get a consilation in the third from Gareth Endicott with a wonderful individual effort.

Stars moved on to Streatham, who would host the Stars in the 90 year old ice rink on Streatham High Road for the last time before moving temporaily to Brixton for the next few Seasons. In addition, overnight Oxford annouced the signing of 17 year old George Nortcliffe on a two-way contract with Guildford who wentS straight into the line up.

Streatham came out to a flying start and scored within the opening 80 seconds on the breakaway. When Oxford got on the powerplay however, the y looked a completly different team and Darren Elliott put away a chance at the back post to level the game and the Stars looked to push on to get ahead, but the Redskins exploited a gap at the back to score on another breakaway to end the first period 2-1 to the hosts.

With neither of the two officials interested in calling penalties on either side, the game turned very chippy and abrasive with several questionable hits being landed. Despite all of this, both teams had good chances including a shot fired in from Dale White on the blueline but neither team could score.

The third period has been a weakness for Oxford all season but the Stars came out with a new determination and created several chances early on. With the officials finally determined to crack down this gave oxford a two man advantage and Richard Wojciak found Andrew Shurmer unmarked who shot top right and leveled the game.

Stars injury crisis looked to get even worse with two players picking up knocks in the third period. Andy Cox recieved an elbow from Norman Pinnington that saw him ejected from the game and Dale White took a puck in the back of his leg to compound Stars woes.

In the closing minutes, Stars had another two man advantage but were unable to score the winner to leave both sides with a well deserved point.

Ken Foreshee “For the most part over the weekend I was happy with our effort. Saturday was always going to be extremly tough considering the amount of injuries we have at the moment. Then on Sunday we really pulled together as a team and gutted out a point against Streatham. I was really proud of the guys on Sunday. We battled back in the 3rd period to tie it up and I felt we were pretty unlucky not to win it. We are making a concious effort to try to pull together in this time of injury crisis. Once we get our guys fit again we should be stronger after going through this difficult time.”
