The hockey season is back, and you can follow it all with us right here on BIH.
We are working on an archive of matches, stats and players from BIH in the past few years.
When Michael Wales and Grant McPherson take to the ice, you know the game won’t be short on action – so supporters of Milton Keynes Lightning will welcome the news that these two combative forwards will be back at the Thunderdome for the 2011-12 season.
Both players are well-known in the EPL for their no-nonsense style of play, and are held in a huge amount of affection by the team’s supporters for their ability to unsettle their rivals’ offensive lines, and for the character that they add to the Lightning line-up - both on and off the ice.
Affectionately known to almost everyone at the Lightning as ‘Muzzy’, Michael Wales has played the vast majority of his ice hockey in Milton Keynes since beginning his career in 1999 and has played for Team GB at U20 level.
“After the highs and lows of last year, I can’t wait to get the new season started”, said Muzzy. “Myself and the rest of the guys are determined to bring silverware back to Milton Keynes, to reward the best fans in the league. Narrowly missing out on winning the play-off final in Coventry has only made us more determined, so we’ll be fighting hard for every trophy next year”.
Grant McPherson, 24, began his senior career playing for Edinburgh Capitals at both BNL and Elite league levels. He signed for the Lightning in the summer of 2006 and in his first season in Milton Keynes was selected for Team GB at U20 level.
The desire to repay the Lightning supporters’ faith with silverware was a key factor in Grant’s decision to return. He said, “Losing the play-off final was obviously disappointing but it makes us, as a team, hungrier to bring silverware back to Milton Keynes. I’m very happy to continue being part of this team - I love the way we play, and we have such a great group of guys all wanting to work for each other. The play-offs proved that we have the best fans in the league, so it would be nice to repay them with some success this year as well.”
Lightning’s head coach Nick Poole said, “Grant plays with heart and passion every night and has become a fan favorite for his 100% commitment and aggressive style. His role in the team has increased every year and this coming year will be no different. He gives the team energy, and this past year an impressive number of goals too. It’s been fantastic watching Grant mature into a key player on our team over the past few years and I am thrilled that he now considers Milton Keynes his home away from home.”
“We have a great team spirit here, and Muzzy is a large part of that. He’s part of the glue in our team, and a real character. He also brings a lot to the table when we take to the ice and he’s very versatile player - we played him on every line last year and he always played his role, bringing grit and energy to the unit he was playing with. Although he doesn’t wear a letter on his chest, he certainly is one of the key leaders on our team and I know he is very pleased and proud to be back for another year.
