The hockey season is back, and you can follow it all with us right here on BIH.
We are working on an archive of matches, stats and players from BIH in the past few years.

The Sheffield Steelers took over top spot in the league with a 5-3 victory against Newcastle in Whitley Bay.
The Vipers had most of the early play but it was Ashley Tait who netted first, deflecting in at 4.36. Taking poor penalties was Newcastle’s undoing on Saturday night and they were guilty of this again in their home opener. They racked up 6 minors in the first period and Jonathan Phillips scored unassisted on the powerplay at 11.32. Ervins Mustukovs had a fine first period and made a succession of good saves as the hosts hit the Steelers hard and often but just couldn’t find a way through.
Jeff Legue and Joey Talbot combined to create a shorthanded goal for the former at 24.23 although Charlie Effinger might have been disappointed that he couldn’t smother the initial shot. If he could have done better on that one there was little he could do about the Steelers’ 4th goal at 26.56. A pass aimed across the crease by Talbot hit a defenceman’s skate and squeezed in the near post. Sheffield did have the better of the better of the early stages of the 2nd period but the 4-0 scoreline didn’t reflect on how well Newcastle had played.
Toms Hartmanis got the Vipers’ first goal of the season on a shorthanded breakaway at 34.41 but Rob Globke rounded off the second period scoring with the goal of the night at 36.10. He drove to the net but after his initial shot was saved and he had fallen to the ice he regained his composure to flick the puck over Effinger into the net from his knees.
If that was the best of the night the strangest came in the third period. With Sheffield pressing on a 5-on-3 powerplay the puck was played back for a Legue slapshot. Unfortunately for the visitors he had broken his stick earlier in the play and was on his way back to the bench for a replacement. Kyle Sibley raced onto the puck and emphatically beat Mustukovs for a goal that raised the biggest cheer of the night at 47.26.
Newcastle’s 3rd goal came to late to make tying the game a realistic prospect but Jaro Rzeszutko’s powerplay goal at 58.55 gave the hosts the final marker of the night. Despite pulling their goalie for the final minute they couldn’t force a late scramble and Sheffield rewarded temporary back up netminder Richard Adams by putting him in for the final seven seconds of play.
This was an important victory for Sheffield but on this showing Newcastle will be causing all of the big guns a lot of problems at Whitley Bay this season.
