Northern Stars coaching duo of Stephen Foster and Ivor Bennett have today finalised the signing of a player direct from the Elite League. Former Newcastle Vipers netminder Richie Lawson has agreed to join the Stars for the 2010-11 season.

Lawson who is a product of the club’s academy programme has spent the past three seasons in the Elite League as back-up to Ryan MacDonald, Andrew Verner and Michel Robinson. The 22-year-old is no stranger to the English National League having won the title with the ENL Vipers back in 2007.

The signing is a major coup for the Stars with co-coach Stephen Foster delighted with the addition. “Being an ex netminder I know the quality that Richie will bring to the team” confirmed the former Durham Wasp. “Richie has Elite League experience with the Vipers and following our promotion back to Division 1 along with our inaugural season in the Northern League it was important we added further quality between the pipes.

“Our aim this season is to ensure we finish in a respectable position within anything else a plus, with Richie having agreed to join it certainly means we’ve got off to a good start off the ice with the signing of such a quality player”.

The Northern Stars held their first ENL try-outs last night with Foster and Bennett having the opportunity to have a look over a number of additional options. Further trial dates have been organised for Thursday 15th July and Thursday 22nd July at 10.15pm.
