The GMB Nottingham Panthers have completed their forward unit for the upcoming Elite League campaign with the signing of 25-year-old six-feet-three-inch Ian McDonald.

The Edmonton native won an award for the most assists during his top flight junior years and has most recently been at the University of Alberta where his accolades included play-off finals MVP in 2008.

His skills level drew attention from several professional clubs in North America but the highly rated centre-man opted for the chance to play in Europe.

“Like others before me, I was told Nottingham was the place to be in the UK and I’m very excited to be joining the Panthers’ organisation,” he said after signing a contract for season 2010-11.

GMB Panthers coach Corey Neilson said : “Some of the scouting reports on this guy have been fantastic. He’s big and strong and he had a point a game through all four years at Alberta. One coach even likened him to NHL star Joe Thornton, if he’s even close to that we know we will have added another winner to the roster.

“He wanted to come here and that has been a key factor in signing all the players for next season. He had a choice to go elsewhere and a choice of clubs in the East Coast Hockey League but he wanted to come to us.

“With the recent addition of Brit Matt Myers, who’s coming back to us from a year in America, we have got a lot of options for next season. I love the idea of being to go hard and fast at opposition teams and with four sets of wingers we’ll be able to wear down even the strongest of opponents.”

Coach Neilson has one import spot left to fill on defence. An announcement on that could come sooner rather than later. The GMB Panthers’ recruitment drive is the most advanced in the league. Season 2010-11, with ten teams in the UK Elite League, promises to be the most exciting yet.

“It’s going to be a great year, a tough year, and an exciting year for the fans. We’ve put together a team with a bit of everything, a team that wants to win for the fans and each other and the organisation,” added the coach.
