Panthers finish year with Devils win
The GMB Nottingham Panthers ended the year with a dominating 5-0 victory over the visiting Cardiff Devils on Wednesday night.
After a scrappy first period the home side got their act together and didn't allow Cardiff any chance to challenge their dominance. Cameron Mann hit a hat-trick and Corey Neilson blasted in the other goal for a 4-0 scoreline going into the third period which was rounded off by a smart Marc Levers finish after he was sent in one-on-one by a clever David Clarke pass.
Cameron Mann's hat-trick goal, his second in 26 seconds and Nottingham's fourth of the game was the Panthers' 700th competitive home goal in the EIHL.
The new dad (third child) said afterwards the match had rounded off a "pretty good" few days for him which included the birth of his new daughter, a great showing in Sheffield and now a hat-trick against the Devils.
Netminder Kevin St Pierre had a 26-shot shut-out to earn his man of the match award from game sponsors Doff Garden Products. He commented afterwards: "We have to keep this going throughout 2010, we've given up too many points to teams below us already and starting with Saturday's visit by Hull we need to kick on from here".
All three top teams won on Wednesday with Belfast beating Sheffield (4-2) and Coventry winning in Hull (2-5).
GMB Panthers next home game is at the Trent FM Arena on Saturday, 7pm, against the Hull Stingrays.
