Panthers hit Steelers title hopes

A severe blow was struck against Steelers league title hopes by nearest and far-from-dearest rivals Panthers as a fired up home side skated to a commanding 5-1 success at the NIC.
Almost 7,000 were there to see Steelers dismantled and that after visiting skipper Jonathan Phillips had fired his side ahead after only 4.52 on the powerplay. Panthers roared straight back and struck three times before the first period break to assume control.
David Clarke was first on the mark for the home side when scoring at 10.03 and he was followed by Rhett Gordon’s first Panther goal at 16.00 and Brock Wilson at 17.17 to end a tousy opening period of some 46 penalty minutes, which included a couple of scraps.
Steelers were unable to make any sort of comeback in the middle session but they did hold on until David-Alexandre Beauregard made it 4-1 Panthers at 31.31 and that was followed by the home side going nap with 28 seconds of the period remaining with Clarke’s second of the night.
A more even third period with Panthers clearly having done their work for the night. No more goals although Steelers powerplay missed out on no fewer than 4 opportunities as the visitors lost for the first time in five, while a happy Panthers broke out of a three game losing streak.
