Panthers sign Zion from Steelers

Top drawer Canadian defenceman Jonathon Zion has signed for the GMB Nottingham Panthers.

The six feet-plus Ontario born blueliner is no stranger to Panthers fans having iced last season at arch-rivals Sheffield after a professional career that has seen him play at Richmond, Reading, Greenville and Idaho in the ECHL and at Cincinnati, Portland, Manchester, Utah and Syracuse in the AHL after being a fourth-round draft pick of the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1999.

He has also had stints in the top flight European leagues including Austria, Denmark, Norway and Sweden.

He had hoped to join the GMB Panthers last season but at the time his representatives made enquries it wasn’t a viable option and he landed in Sheffield instead.

Now he says he is thrilled to be finally joining the Nottingham organisation and his new coach Corey Neilson is very excited about his latest recruit:
“Jon is an offensive threat but also knows his job on the blue-line. He brings a lot to the table and I can see him having a big role on special teams for us as well as playing a defensive game at times whilst also jumping into the play to help the forwards.

“He was one of the top defencemen in the Elite League last year and his skills shone out so it was no wonder a lot of clubs wanted to sign him for next year.

“With two D-men to sign and two forwards I have made no secret of the fact that I wanted a solid defenceman and another who would add more adventure up front, an offensive-defencemen,.

“In Jon that’s exactly what we’ve got. I don’t think we could have added a better player for the role that I have in mind.

“This is another key signing in our quest for more honours.”
