A fantastic start to the start of the new season for Kalcrest Sheffield Steeldogs, as Coach Andre Payette took his team to a four point weekend and top of the League table following a 2-3 OT win at the Link Centre and then a 4-1 victory at home on Sunday.

Steeldogs played some great hockey for five of the 6 periods against Swindon Wildcats this weekend. Once they had re-grouped for the second period in Swindon, after going down 2-0 in the opener, they never looked back.

Swindon Wildcats arrived in Sheffield on Sunday off the back of a 6-0 win in Telford on Saturday but playing their 3rd League game in 3 days. However, the home fans were treated to a fast and feisty first period which included a fight and three goals. Thomas Jeffery took on Nicky Watt, who had just charged Edgars Bebris, giving Steeldogs their first powerplay opportunity until Payette picked up a holding penalty at 6.53.

Steeldogs took charge of the game with two quick goals just 5 seconds apart, when Steve Duncombe scored short-handed at 8.03 followed by Janis Ozolins at 8.08. A further goal by Greg Wood at 16.37 sealed a 3-0 first period with a shot differential of 4 on Ben Bowns to 16 on Thomas Murdy, who did well to stop the scoreline being higher.

The second period started with end to end hockey and a more equal period, with Edgars Bebris scoring the only goal of the period, a wrap-around at 29.22 for a 4-0 scoreline at the end of 40 minutes.

Wildcats pushed the Steeldogs in the third for an even shot count and finally broke Ben Bowns shut-out at 48.02 with an unassisted goal by James Knight. Both goalies made some great stops to keep the scoreline at 4-1 to the end of the game. MOM's were Steve Duncombe for the Steeldogs and Shane Moore for the Wildcats.

A great start for Andre Payette's team and whose positive stance going into the weekend paid off. He said “It was a fantastic way to start the League campaign with a 4 pointer. It was a happy team bus coming back from Swindon in the early hours of Saturday morning and an even happier dressing room last night. Now we have to focus on next weekend against Basingstoke away and Milton Keynes at home. No weekend is going to be easy this year, especially after seeing some interesting results from this weekend's league games and we have to keep working hard in training and in games.”
