Peterborough Phantoms

With their lone weekend outing, the Flames paid a visit to Peterborough Phantoms and fell victim to a 45-26 shot disadvantage during a 6-3 defeat to the Cambridgeshire outfit. The home team took control early by jumping out to a 2-0 lead before the game was 10 minutes old.  At 5:23 Darius Lelenas opened the Phantoms account before Jeff Glowa doubled the lead less than 2 minutes later.  Martin Masa hit back only 28 seconds after that and then Nathan Rempel netted against his former team to even the game in the 12th minute.  Inside the final minute of the 1st, however, Glowa added another, this time on a powerplay, to give Peterborough a lead they would not relinquish.  Not long after the re-start, the Phantoms established another 2 goal margin with a Maris Ziedins strike.   Rempel pulled Surrey’s team to within a goal at 29:09 on the powerplay, but another period final minute goal, this time Lelenas’ 2nd of the evening, re-stored the 2 goal cushion prior to the final 20 minutes.  The Phantoms had the only goal of the last period at 57:53 when Tom Carlon beat Mark Lee in the Flames net who replaced Miro Hala after the final break.

The Flames next outing is Wednesday, February 9th in Slough for leg 1 of the Cup Semi final.  The game has been rescheduled from its original February 16th date.

Flames Head Coach Paul Dixon reflected on the result and its impact on the club’s league chase:

“We have always said that whenever you get that odd weekend with only one opportunity to secure points, you have to be sure that you are ready for it and take the chance when it comes.  That principle is even more paramount in the last bit of the schedule when you are trailing in the race for the league championship.  Losing that game has certainly put us in a much more difficult position.  To make it worse we can’t even look back on the game and feel good about the way we played.  We made some very basic mistakes on a routine basis and were simply outplayed from start to finish by a team who were ready for us.  They hemmed us in our end for several portions of the game and generated a lot of shots and opportunities to pick up a very well deserved win.  While you need to reflect on performance to consider where you go next, you don’t ever want to spend too much time beating yourself up especially in this situation where it is now a very quick turnaround for an enormous leg 1 in Slough on Wednesday due to the fixture change.  We have a trophy to begin defending and we need to be prepared to get a good start against a good Jets side.”
