Canadian defenceman Trevor Read has revealed the Excel Hull Stingrays players “are pretty excited” by their huge home Elite League games against Coventry Blaze and Braehead Clan this weekend.

Stingrays have won three of their last five games, which have yielded seven points, as they continue their bid to catch Clan in sixth place.

Clan are eight points clear of Stingrays, who have four games in hand, with the Scottish team only one adrift of fifth-placed Blaze.

But Stingrays play both teams twice more this season and Read feels four points this weekend would be huge for their top-six aspirations.

He said: “They are two massive games for us. It is a huge opportunity and the guys are pretty excited. We know what we have to do and we will be ready.

“They are two very important home games and we are aiming for maximum points. It’s getting towards the end of the season and it’s time to raise the level and to get that play-off mentality.

“We got three points last weekend and we just need to keep chipping away and come to work every night. We will just concentrate on our game and see what happens.”
