Romfo stays with Devils

American born defenceman Scott Romfo, released from the roster earlier this season, is remaining with the Devils organisation as injury and tactical cover for Head Coach Gerad Adams.

Romfo is going to remain in the area whilst completing his MBA with Cardiff Business School, a major corporate partner of the club. Whilst studying he will train with the EIHL side and provide Adams with an option should there be an injury but also give the coach a motivator should he feel a player needs to improve.

“We are very pleased that Scott will be staying to help the team” said Adams, “this is yet another example of the intentions of the club and once again the support from Matt (Burge, owner) and Shannon (Hope, Director of Hockey) has been fantastic.”

“We have shown this season, through our British recruitment and home-grown talent, just what a difference depth can mean to a squad. This gives us even more strength in that area. I aim to run with the best 10 imports every game, which will keep us all – me included – honest and hard working in the line-up.”

This is a hugely positive step for the organisation at a crucial time of the season. A Challenge Cup semi-final second leg is due next Wednesday and if the Devils can improve their poor form on the road, a title challenge is not beyond their capability.

“We made an agreement, a commitment to Scott and to Cardiff Business School, and it is important to us that we honour those” said a club spokesman today. “We have worked hard with Scott to allow him to complete his studies and this arrangement is good for all of us. We look forward to an exciting home-stretch of the season.”

Sentiments echoed by Gerad Adams when he reflects on lack of injury cover in past years:

“Not too long ago we headed into the playoffs and I had Matt Towe and Phil Hill double-shifting at Centre. Both are good hockey players and did a great job for us, but that is not the situation we want to be in and we know our fans are hungry for more and for success. This year we are not going to limp into the end of the season. We are going to charge into it full steam ahead and cause everyone else in this league as many problems as we can.”
