Julian Smith

Julian Smith is the latest player to pledge his future to the Romford Raiders.

Defenceman Smith made a big impression on the blue line for Danny Marshall’s men last season, before a shoulder injury ruled him out of the play-off semi-final defeat against Chelmsford.

And Smith, named to the league’s all-star team this season, will be back for the 2011/12 English National League campaign, along with Jason Buckman, Michael Gray and Glen Jackson, as the club push for honours. as the Rom Valley Way club push for honours.

Team manager Mick Cahill said: “It’s a particular pleasure, and a bit of a relief actually, to have Jules back on board.

“We know for certain other clubs made him very attractive offers, but it says something about Julian Smith, and maybe a bit about Danny Marshall’s growing reputation, that Smithy has decided to stay at Rom Valley Way.

“It was no surprise when Jules got the nod for the ENL all-Star team. He had an outstanding year for us and it was just a crying shame for Jules and the Raiders he ended the season with his arm in a sling.

“We really missed his presence in the play-offs but, truthfully, we were fortunate to get as much out of him as we did. It turned out to be a fracture, an injury he’d been playing through for weeks, so every movement must have been agony.

“He was voted our Defenceman of the Year and was a key man in Danny’s plans for the new season. Adding Jules to the roster is great news all round.”

Gray and Jackson will share goaltending duties again, after finished inside the division’s top five for save percentage.

Cahill added: “We were all very happy with the performances of the pair of them last season.

“Good stats, good attitude and good in the dressing room. Why would we change?”

The versatile Buckman will be back for a third campaign and Cahill said: “The example he sets is one for others to emulate. They don’t come much more committed than Bucky.”
