Sanford: Give ourselves a chance

Sanford: Give ourselves a chance

Canadian defenceman James Sanford remains convinced Excel Hull Stingrays are capable of beating the top teams in the Elite League - if they stick to the game plan for 60 minutes.

Stingrays, icing a full line-up for the first time this season, suffered back-to-back home defeats by title-chasing rivals Nottingham Panthers and Coventry Blaze at the weekend which sent them back to the bottom of the table.

But Sanford said: "For the majority of the weekend we played some pretty good hockey but we have to do it for 60 minutes because when we do play hockey we dominate these sides down low and we do a great job - but we have to limit our turnovers. We have a good team and we have all the components to be a competitive team but every game we are making a mistake and with the offensive talent of some of these teams we are behind the eight ball before the game even starts.

"We can play with these top teams for 30-40 minutes every game but we have to do it all the time. If we stick to our game plan and keep teams close and play hard we are going to end up on top of those games. All the games we have won have been by one or two goals and if we get down to the nitty gritty with teams like Nottingham and Coventry and if we are in the last couple of minutes tied or winning by one I will take my team over their team any day of the week. It's just a matter of getting there and giving ourselves a chance to win and not find ourselves two or three behind. I believe we can do it but we all need to get on the same page and believe we can do it."
