Schwarz signs up to complete Vipers defensive core

Defenceman John Schwarz has signed up to fill the Vipers' final spot on the blueline for the coming season.

The 6'3" Calgary native is about to embark on his second professional season, having turned pro with Las Vegas Wranglers in the ECHL last season.

In 66 ECHL games he scored three goals and added nine assists for 12 points, while chalking up 122 penalty minutes.

Before turning pro Schwarz graduated from Michigan Tech in the NCAA where he played 126 times in four years with 13 points and 217 penalty minutes.

Danny Stewart, coach of the Winn Solicitors-backed Vipers, said today: "John gives us yet another big presence on the back end.  He is a very steady dman that plays his own end especially well.  He is a pain in the backside to play against and gets under other players skin.

"He also adds an element of toughness in the way he plays, and although it is not a main part of his game he will drop the gloves when neccessary.

"With this signing my d-core is complete and I think we have the right balance of size, toughness and skill."

Schwarz joins Blair Stayzer, Kyle Sibley and Scott Langdon as the import blueliners for the Vipers, with Sam Zajac and Rob Wilson looking to take good minutes as a fifth and sixth defenceman.

Newcastle's season starts on September 11/12 with home and away challenge games with Edinburgh followed by the 'Bragging Rights' game against Whitley on Wednesday 15 September.

The League season starts on September 18 with a trip to Sheffield before the home opener the following night when Sheffield are the visitors for Ice Wars: The Vipers Strike Back.

Tickets for all games are on sale now, and season tickets are still available for 27 games.  Details are from the Vipers office on 0191 4774100 or www.vipershockey.co.uk/shop.
