The hockey season is back, and you can follow it all with us right here on BIH.
We are working on an archive of matches, stats and players from BIH in the past few years.
The Guildford Flames ice hockey club began the evening in good standing by taking a 2-0 lead at home against Sheffield Scimitars before the determined Yorkshire side stormed back with the next 3 goals on their way to an 8-4 defeat of Spectrum’s men. Nathan Rempel got the home team on the board first when he scored at 9:22. Rob Lamey extended the lead to a pair in the 14th minute. Goals by Matt Haywood and Peter Slamiar, the latter on the powerplay, at 14:34 and 17:02 quickly wiped the lead off the clock. The Scimitars wasted little time getting in front in the second period when another Haywood strike set them to a 3-2 edge. Some quality Flames opportunities, including a 5 on 3 manpower advantage, went unrewarded until a Martin Masa goal inside the final 3 minutes of the period levelled the event. A Flames penalty shortly thereafter proved costly, however, when Mark Stewart found himself with an empty cage to put his side back in front 4-3 at the second break. Just 8 seconds into the final stanza Stewart netted again to make it 5-3. A James Archer powerplay goal at 51:44 increased the lead to 3 and Stephen Wallace made it 7-3 just 18 seconds after that. Mark Turner scored the 8th of Sheffield’s night at 55:05 ahead of a 57th minute Lukas Smital goal that closed the gap slightly but had no effect on the ultimate result.
Flames Head Coach Paul Dixon expressed the team’s frustration at the outcome:
“In terms of territorial play and a massive shot differential in our favour we did what we would have hoped for in terms of overall play. Unfortunately, the only statistic that counts is goals and they simply made the absolute most of their opportunities while we did not. It is extremely frustrating to take a loss when by all accounts we should have picked up a win. It is doubly frustrating when this type of occurrence takes place on a single game weekend, especially bearing in mind that we have another single game ahead of us with a trip to league leaders Manchester Phoenix. We have put ourselves in a position where only a win will do and that is our mindset with a full week of practice ahead of that crucial meeting.”
