Coach Andre Payette of the Sheffield Steeldogs had great pleasure in announcing several recently signed players to his roster, as well as introducing his new captain at a specially arranged Supporters' Club Quiz Night at the Noose and Gibbet last night.

The fans were delighted to hear of the return of some Sheffield players as well as the addition of a new player. Andre's commitment to making the Steeldogs' roster essentially a 'made in Sheffield' one, unique in the English Premier League and demonstrates the Steeldog's objective of developing the local Sheffield Academy players.

Three players, two of whom are Sheffield-born and trained, have moved back over the Pennines from Manchester Phoenix where they helped Tony Hand to lift his first English Premiership League title. Greg Wood and Ben Morgan have played in the Sheffield EPL in the past and both are GB U20's Gold Medal winners in 2006. The third new signing is Kiev-born ex-Hull and Manchester, Pavel Gomeniuk and all are ex-team-mates of Andre Payette.

Greg Wood is returning to his home club after several years playing at Elite League level before signing with Manchester two year's ago. Andre was able to witness Greg Wood's attributes whilst playing alongside him in Manchester the season before last. Andre said 'I welcome Greg to the Steeldogs' roster, he is a gritty and very hard-working forward who has great experience playing at Elite level in Basingstoke and Coventry. He will have a massive impact on the team dynamics and with the combination of his experience and character, I am proud to appoint him as my Captain for the upcoming season.

Ben Morgan is a former fan favourite and skilled defenceman who has played for many years through all levels in Sheffield, including one season with Sheffield Steelers before moving on to Manchester last year. Andre is extremely pleased at having enticed Ben back to his roots in Sheffield where he will be a major addition to the defensive corps. He said of Ben 'I rate Ben as one of the best British defenceman around, and combined with his experience, additional offensive skills and leadership abilities, he will be an excellent player to have in the dressing room and on the ice.

Pavel Gomeniuk is a very experienced defenceman who was originally due to sign with Sheffield last year until that team demised in July. He was picked up by Manchester while the new Steeldogs team was in the making, but as an ex-Vipers' team-mate of Payette's, Andre has succeeded in bringing him to Sheffield where he wanted to play. Gomeniuk, nicknamed Pasha, was awarded a place in the EPL 2nd All Star team last season and with his great defensive skills, he helped Manchester pick up the League trophy.

Andre commented 'I couldn't be happier with bringing someone with Pavel's qualities on board for next season. He has won trophies at every level and his experience at the back will be invaluable. I can't wait for the new season to begin with the signings I have in place and other players who are wanting to come to the Steeldogs'.

Andre is delighted to have secured defenceman Lee Haywood's signature again for next season. A tremendous stay-at-home defenceman who puts in 110% of effort into every game for his Sheffield team. Andre said 'I am really pleased Lee has signed with us again for next season, we will have one of the strongest defensive units in the league backstopped by the best up-and-coming young netminder, Ben Bowns.

Forward Andrew Hirst is returning to the Steeldogs after moving to Hull Stingrays in January last year but who wanted to return to the Steeldogs under Andre this year. A young Sheffield player with a lot of potential who Andre is very happy to see back in a Steeldogs jersey next season.

Thomas Jeffery from Worksop is a big tough stay-at-home defenceman and who is not afraid to drop the gloves. He is moving from Peterborough Phantoms where he stepped up to EPL two seasons ago.

Andre Payette is working hard behind the scenes on his team plus attracting local sponsorship. Player sponsorship packages are being snapped up already and season ticket sales have already increased over last season's. The Early Bird offer is now closed and the regular Season Ticket Application forms are available to download from the website.
