The hockey season is back, and you can follow it all with us right here on BIH.
We are working on an archive of matches, stats and players from BIH in the past few years.
The Newcastle Vipers got themselves into penalty trouble early and often in their league opener and paid a heavy price as the Steelers cruised to an 8-0 victory.
Jeff Legue opened the scoring on a 5-on-3 powerplay at 2.09 with a wrist shot that went through a crowd and under Charlie Effinger. Jamie Carroll and Patrik Forsbacka were in the box when that goal was scored and they both returned there later in the period, yet it was Kyle Sibley with the costliest infringement. He lost his helmet late on in the first and then lost his head by skating over to collect it and rejoining the play. Under the new rules he should have headed straight for the bench but the illegal equipment call gave the Steelers another powerplay chance and they took it at 19.50. Jonathan Phillips held onto the puck, waited for Steve Munn to join the play, found him with an accurate pass and the D-man flicked it in.
Effinger had made some good saves in the opening period but he let four get past him in the second. Hewitt profited at 26.13 when Munn’s long shot wasn’t held and Legue made it 4-0 as he scored from a breakaway chance at 33.25. It was Munn’s long pass that sent him clear and this game was possibly his best offensive game during his time in Sheffield.
There were two more powerplay goals still to come in the middle period. Rob Globke opened his account for the Steelers at 37.06 with Forsbacka again in the box and Legue completed his hat-trick at 39.05 after Paul Sample had taken a delay of game penalty.
Ervins Mustukovs in the home goal was sharp when called upon and made 30 saves as he recorded his third successive shut out in the league. Effinger made plenty of stops himself but if Newcastle are going to win on the road they can’t afford to let 51 shots rain in on their netminder.
2 of Sheffield’s 16 shots in the final period found the net, the first from player/coach Ben Simon at 50.26 was a 5-on-3 marker banked in off the goalie’s shoulder from a narrow angle. The final goal of the evening really rubbed salt into the visitor’s already gaping wounds. Sheffield sent out Mark Thomas and Steve Munn as wingers on the powerplay and they helped to cause a scramble in the crease that resulted in a penalty shot. Thomas took it and the Steelers least prolific scorer looked like he’d been doing this all his life. He easily beat Effinger up high at 52.19 to complete the scoring.
There was enough time left for Jason Hewitt to hit the bar and for John Schwarz to take exception to Robert Dowd’s check from behind. Schwarz picked up a 2+10 for leaving the bench to start an altercation and Dowd received the same punishment for his check. The former seemed especially upset and it will be interesting to see if he seeks revenge in the return match at Whitley Bay.
