Shoot-out success for Stingrays
Hull Stingrays completed a fantastic four-point Elite League weekend with a 5-4 victory after penalty shots over Nottingham Panthers at the National Ice Centre.
Stingrays, buoyed by their 7-2 success at home to Sheffield Steelers on Saturday night, made another slow start and again conceded first as Rob Bellamy fired home after just 46 seconds.
But player-coach Sylvain Cloutier pulled Stingrays level on the powerplay in the 13th minute with his third goal of the season
Defenceman Trevor Read, with his second of the campaign, then put Stingrays ahead but Jade Galbraith restored parity within 34 seconds.
Galbraith notched his second of the game in the 29th minute but back came Stingrays and top goalscorer Jereme Tendler claimed his 21st goal in 24 games – his best return since turning pro - with a powerplay marker just 28 seconds before the end of the middle session.
After Marc Levers had put Panthers ahead again, Stingrays tied it at 4-4 through Andrew Coburn, their third powerplay goal of the game.
Overtime failed to separate the sides and Stingrays sealed the extra point with a 3-1 success in the shoot-out with Jason Silverthorn, Konstantin Kalmikov and Drew Bannister all successful and David Clarke missing for Panthers.
Stingrays are now just three points behind sixth-placed Braehead Clan and have five games in hand.
