Jason Silverthorn hailed a “great team weekend” after he produced a sublime overtime winner to help Hull Stingrays beat Elite League leaders Belfast Giants 3-2 at Hull Arena.
Goals from Josh Prudden and Mike Bayrack had put Belfast 2-0 up but top goalscorer Jereme Tendler hauled Stingrays back into the game and, after netminder Christian Boucher was pulled for an extra skater, player-coach Sylvain Cloutier tied the game with just 24 seconds left to force overtime.
Silverthorn’s individual marker then earned Stingrays the extra point to complete a four-point weekend following the 4-2 win at Newcastle Vipers on Saturday night. It has left them four points behind sixth-placed Braehead Clan with three games in hand.
Silverthorn said: “The guys worked hard. We battled through some adversity in Newcastle and came back from a 2-0 deficit and did the same thing against Belfast. We found a way to pull it out and that is what we need to do.
“In Newcastle it was good to battle it out and come out on top. It was huge for the team and then against Belfast we wanted to keep the ball rolling. We got behind but we kept plugging away so it was a good weekend for the boys.
“You always keep believing. We started to push late in the third and you are hoping for something to break for you. Bouch played unbelievable to keep us in it so it was another team effort.
“We always believe and you always have to believe, no matter what situation you are in.”
The winner capped a fine return for Silverthorn, who was back in the line-up this weekend after six games on the sidelines with concussion.
The Canadian forward added: “It was nice to be able to finish it so it was a good win. It was nice to contribute coming back and to contribute in a positive way and help the boys win and hopefully we can continue that.
“It was a great team weekend. We want to keep building from here.”
