Sky Sports Commentator David Simms has launched his own campaign to get hockey fans backing the Newcastle Vipers this weekend.

Newcastle play host to Simms' former club Sheffield Steelers on Saturday, and the pundit has called on fans to try and sell out all 3,000 seats at the Hillheads rink - whether the fans can make the game or not.

"Ice hockey is a wonderful community, and right now the Vipers need our help.  I've purchased a ticket for Saturday though I can't make the game, and I know others have done the same," said Simms today.

"My own club Sheffield benefitted from the support of hockey fans from across the country in our hour of need, now Sheffield fans in particular have the chance to repay the favour.

"Whitley Bay has 3,000 seats and it would be amazing and show what a great family that UK hockey is if we could sell a ticket for all of those seats.

"Jaimie Longmuir is probably the hardest working man in hockey right now, and everyone up there is doing their absolute best to take the club forward.  But right now they need our help, and I hope the fans get behind them."

So far the Vipers have had ticket requests from across the Elite League and GM Jaimie Longmuir is on record as saying the response is "humbling".

Saturday's game, Newcastle Vipers v Sheffield Steelers: The Whitley Classic, starts at 7pm at Whitley Bay Ice Rink.  Tickets are available at the advance rate from the club priced at £12.50 for adults, £9.50 for concessions, £5.50 for under 16’s and £32.00 for a family (2 adults & 2 under 16’s).

The Ticket hotline is 0191 4774100 or tickets can also be bought online at www.vipershockey.co.uk/shop

Saturday's game also features the annual Air the Bear event where supporters are asked to bring a bear or other soft toy to the rink, wrapped in a clear plastic bag, and when the Vipers score their first goal the toys are thrown onto the ice and taken to children in local hospitals at Christmas.
