Simon set to be Steelers coach
Former NHLer Ben Simon is expected to be announced as the new player-coach of the Sheffield Steelers by the end of the week.
Steelers owner Bob Phillips is believed to have moved for Simon on Monday to replace Dave Matsos who has departed to join the Windsor Spitfires.
Simon who spent four seasons in the NHL with the Atlanta Thrashers and Nashville Predators almost join the Coventry Blaze last season.
However in the end, the 32-year-old decided to take an offer from the American Hockey League’s Toronto Marlies where he went on to score 2 goals and 6 assists in 44 games.
BIH understands that Jeff Legue, Joe Talbot and Steve Munn could still depart the Steel City outfit .
Simon who will take on his first coaching role could have to work hard to persuade a number of Sheffield’s star players to remain with the club with many believed to be unhappy following the departures of Matsos and General Manager Mike O’Connor.
